Five Things You Need To Know About Driving In The Rain

Hello again from "The Driver Guy"!

When you were studying the California DMV Drivers' Handbook, you no doubt came across the section entitled, "Slippery Roads".  The booklet states: "Slow down at the first sign of rain. This is when many roads are the most slippery because oil and dust have not been washed away."

When the weather gets wet, it's important to not panic, stay calm and remember these five tips:

First: "Go With The Slow!" In the rain you should drive 5 to 10 mph below the posted speed limit. If there is no posted speed limit, use California Vehicle Code Section 22352 as a reference to determine your speed.

Second: "Look, It's a Hydroplane!". The Number One cause of accidents in the rain is when the cars' tires leave the ground and skid into something. Stay in the middle lane to avoid puddles of water.

Third: "Enter The No Spin Zone!" If you find yourself in a spin, don't slam on the brakes but lightly touch them and turn into the spin, not away from it.

Fourth, "Space Isn't Just For Outer." In great weather, leave a cushion of one car length for every 10 mph between you and the car in front. In the rain, double the distance!

Fifth: "Car Care Equals Safe Fare." Take care of your car before the road gets rough. Change the wind shield wipers once a year. Check all your lights to make sure you are not driving blind. And please have the proper tread and air pressure on each tire.

Hope this helps and remember the driver guy is watching!!! And feel free to add you own helpful tips in the comments section!
